PS calls for tech-driven agriculture in TVETs

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Principal Secretary Dr Esther Muoria has challenged institutions to adopt innovative and technology-driven approaches in agriculture to better prepare learners for a rapidly evolving job market.

Speaking at the Kisii National Polytechnic in Kisii town, PS Muoria noted that government research had revealed significant job opportunities for skilled youth across various industries locally and abroad, thereby justifying the need to integrate technology into training institutions’ programmes.

“There is a lot of employment for our youth, both nationally and internationally and therefore, we have to put our best foot forward to ensure that our youth have the requisite skills to be able to work in the industry,” Dr Muoria said.

The PS cited the Skills Initiative for Africa (SIFA) programme, supported by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development and German government at the Polytechnic, noting that it is equipping the youth with modern agricultural skills.

She called for a shift from outdated farming methods to mechanised and digital approaches, saying the move will transform the agriculture sector.

The PS noted that embracing innovation would not only boost productivity, but also reduce labour intensity in farming.

“We need to come up with innovative ways of performing tasks such as milking our cows instead of the traditional way of using our hands because these new ways will ensure our youth are in demand nationally and abroad,” said Dr Muoria.

The PS further reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring young people acquire relevant, market-driven skills that meet both local and international labour demands.
