Three arrested over Linda Mwananchi Kisii attack

Police in Kisii have arrested three suspects in connection with the recent attack on a convoy of motor vehicles allied to the Linda Mwananchi’s faction leaders along the Kisii–Keroka road in Keumbu, in the  County.

In a press statement, the Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the suspects were apprehended following an analysis of the viral video circulating in mainstream and social media, depicting the Friday incident.

The attack showed a convoy of vehicles being pelted with stones by a group of individuals, leaving several people seriously injured and vehicles vandalized.

Nyaga noted that a more detailed analysis of the video, alongside wider investigative efforts, was underway with a view to making further arrests.

“The National Police Service (NPS) strongly condemns the events depicted. Political intolerance, in

whatever form, is unacceptable and will be rigorously pursued through the  criminal justice system,” he said.

The police spokesperson further revealed the Inspector General of the National Police Service (IG-NPS) has directed the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) to expedite its assessment of all aspects of the violence, identify any operational gaps that may have contributed to the incident, and take appropriate action within the broader context of the attack.

He appealed for the public’s continued support and encouraged anyone with information relating to this incident to share it patriotically with the nearest police station, or via the Toll‑Fee numbers 999, 911, or 0800 722 203 (FichuakwaDCI), or through WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.

“As a Service, we remain committed to protecting the public, investigating all cases to their logical conclusion, and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice,” read part of the statement.

Meanwhile, political leaders have condemned the violent attack and called for swift action against those responsible.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Treasurer Timothy Bosire described the incident as a threat to Kenya’s democratic freedoms and questioned the response of security agencies during the attack.

In a statement issued Saturday, Bosire noted the events witnessed in Keumbu posed a danger to the country’s democratic gains and should never be normalized.

Kisii Woman Representative Doris Donya called for political tolerance and encouraged the leaders, security agencies and residents to work together to promote peace  within the county.

Speaking during a fundraiser at Kenyoro SDA Church in Bonchari Constituency, Donya said that leaders should not condone violence or use of the young people to disrupt opponents’ gatherings.

Similarly, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna also condemned the attack, saying that such incidents undermine the democratic space, ahead of the 2027 elections.

Sifuna stressed that different political sides should be allowed to freely meet the citizens and sell their agenda for the country.

Nyaribari Chache Constituency Jubilee aspirant Dr. Joseph Birundu also accused police officers of not taking action as they were being attacked.

Birundu said the police appeared to take sides and called for speedy investigations into the matter.

The incident has renewed concerns among leaders across the political divide over rising political tensions ahead of the 2027 General Election.
