Viewing of late Raila Odinga’s body concludes smoothly in Kisumu

By R, KNA

The viewing of the body of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga ended as planned shortly after 3:00 p.m, Saturday, at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu County.

Thousands of mourners from all walks of life thronged the stadium to pay their last respects to the fallen political icon, whose influence and legacy have left a lasting mark on Kenya’s political landscape.

As the plane carrying the remains of the late Odinga took-off for Siaya, emotional scenes unfolded. Screams rent the air as mourners waved farewell, while vuvuzelas were blown loudly in his honour. His favourite Jamaican song, ‘I’m on My Way’ by Harry Belafonte, played over the sound system alongside ‘Safiri Salama’ by Amos and Josh, setting a somber yet celebratory tone as the crowd bid their final goodbye.

The body will stay overnight at his Opoda Farm in Bondo, where burial arrangements have been finalized.

He will be laid to rest on Sunday at the family graveyard beside his father, the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, in accordance with his wishes.

The ceremony was devoid of speeches and dignitaries who attended quietly departed without making any public addresses.

The late Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday, October 15,2025 in India, where he had been receiving treatment. His death has plunged the nation into mourning, prompting the government to declare seven days of national mourning and a public holiday on Friday in his honour.
