Wildlife victims in Kerio to get compensation

Hardly a week passes in Kenya without a report in the local press of death or destruction of property by wildlife or retaliatory attacks on wildlife by their victims.

In a tour of the Kerio Valley Zablon Omulakho KWS warden in charge of Elgeyo Marakwet County apologized to the residents over the destruction of their crops by stray elephants.

Omulakho assured the farmers that the elephants will be relocated as from Friday this week as the chopper which is to be used for the relocation process has already arrived.

He urged the farmers affected by the recent invasion of the elephants to fill out compensation forms for the compensation process. He assured the farmers that they will be compensated.

As a way of giving back to the community the warden told Kerio valley residents to come up with a project that will be fully funded by KWS in the region.

He added that CAS for tourism will visit the region next week where a compiled report will be availed to him on the extent of destruction caused by the elephants and give guidelines on the compensation process.
