Learners from vulnerable families in Matungu Sub-County are set to benefit from the Kakamega County Government bursary programme, following the commencement of bursary issuance across the region.
Speaking during the bursary issuance exercise in Matungu, Monday, County Attorney, Vivienne Mmbaka, said delays in disbursing the bursaries was occasioned by a prolonged legal dispute between the County and National governments over the mandate to administer bursary programmes.
She said the County government will continue to support needy learners and ensure that students from disadvantaged backgrounds continue accessing education without interruption.
Chief Officer for Tourism and Industrialization, Saxon Kweyu, urged school principals to uphold fairness, transparency and integrity in the management of bursary funds by ensuring that only deserving students benefit from the programme.
Kweyu also cautioned school administrators against falling prey to fraudsters allegedly demanding money in exchange for facilitating bursary allocations.
He advised school heads to promptly report such incidents to relevant authorities for appropriate action.
Kakamega Governor, Fernandes Barasa, on May 8, 2026 launched a countywide bursary kitty worth shillings 149,350,500 aimed at supporting learners across the 12 sub-counties.
Matungu Sub-county received an allocation of Sh11,887,000 under the programme.
Also present during the exercise was Chief Officer for Livestock, Veterinary and Fisheries, Oscar Odunga.
