The government will continue rehabilitating the five critical water towers in the country, as well as other degraded areas to enhance to resilient against climatic changes.
The initiative, being spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry has so far seen establishment of millions of trees in Mt. Kenya, Cherangani Hills, Mt. Elgon, Aberdare ranges as well as the Mau forest.
Speaking during the World Environment Day celebrations at Olkalou Arboretum ground, Nyandarua County Friday, Environment CS Dr. Deborah Barasa said the rehabilitation of the water towers and other areas has seen enhancement of water security as well as biodiversity.
Dr. Barasa further noted that through Kenya Kwanza government, the Ministry has operationalized the Kenya National Carbon Registry through National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), hence creating a transparent framework for carbon market industry.
“The government will continue to expand green energy solutions and support renewable energy investment. These efforts will help in reducing emissions while strengthening economy,” she noted.
The CS also pointed out the ministry is supporting farmers through climate smart agriculture, improving weather forecasting and offering climate advisory services.
She said through these measures the government is enhancing food security, while building resilient against climate change.
Additionally Dr. Barasa noted that through enactment of Meteorological Act 2026, this was a big and significant achievement that has seen strengthening of information and early warning systems.
“This has marked a historical milestone that will enhance capacity of the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority to provide timely and accurate weather and climate information. This will help farmers, pastoralists, and community to make informed decisions that protect livelihood and lives,” noted Dr. Barasa.
She called upon schools, households and institutions to utilize the forthcoming October to December short rains season by planting and nurturing trees.
On his part, Nyandarua County Executive Member in charge of Environment, Samuel Wachira Mugo who spoke on behalf of Governor Moses Kiarie Badilisha said Nyandarua County has established Nyandarua County Climate Change Action Plan that will ensure Nyandarua County is a county with a low carbon, climate resilient economy that sustains livelihoods.
Mugo added that that the Action Plan will guide the necessary actions to address climate change impacts and take advantage of any emerging opportunities.
