Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa has welcomed a High Court decision limiting the period retired presidents can hold leadership positions in political parties.
Barasa said the ruling would allow former presidents to leave active party leadership and take up the role of elder statesmen.
He said this would also give sitting presidents room to focus on running the country and delivering services without political distractions from their predecessors.
“The ruling provides an opportunity for former Presidents to embrace their role as elder statesmen while allowing sitting administrations to focus on delivering services and implementing their programmes,” Barasa said.
Speaking at Topa Market in Mumias West Sub-County, Barasa urged retired President Uhuru Kenyatta to give President William Ruto space to govern and serve Kenyans.
The governor said former presidents have valuable experience that can be used to guide the country without directly engaging in the leadership of political parties.
The High Court ruling upheld the provision restricting a retired president from holding political party office beyond six months after leaving State House.
Barasa spoke on Wednesday during the disbursement of shillings four million in social protection grants to vulnerable groups in Mumias West.
