Farmers in Kirinyaga County have been urged to embrace modern farming technologies to boost efficiency and reduce health risks associated with chemical exposure.
Speaking during the launch of spraying drones at Agitech Farm in Mutithi, Mwea, Mazao Afya Director Peter Karanja said adopting drone technology marks a critical step in transforming agriculture in Kirinyaga.
He noted that many farmers still rely on outdated and faulty pumps and sprayers, which often leak and expose them to hazardous chemicals.
“Our farmers have been using very old technologies like pumps and sprayers that are leaking and particular products are hazardous. Some do not even use protective clothing and therefore they expose themselves to all types of hazards,” Karanja said
He added that drones are not only safer but also faster and more cost-effective. A single drone, he explained, can spray one acre in just 15 minutes, saving time, labour costs, and minimising direct contact with harmful pesticides.
Wellington Wasike, Managing Director of Seedco Group Kenya, described the launch as a game changer for farming in the region.
“Drone technology is no longer a dream in Kirinyaga but a reality. It will make weed control and other spraying activities more efficient, cheaper, and quicker,” Wasike said.
He encouraged farmers to form groups so they can jointly invest in drones, ensuring that entire community’s benefit from the innovation.
Farmers also welcomed the initiative. Ms Nderitu, a farmer in Mwea, said the technology is especially beneficial to women farmers who may struggle with heavy pumps.
She added that the high cost of hiring casual labour has made farming more expensive, and drones will help reduce those costs.
