Githunguri’s Huduma Centre nears completion

Construction of the first-ever Huduma Centre in Githunguri Constituency has reached approximately 80 per cent completion, bringing residents closer to accessing key government services within their locality.

The project, which was officially launched in March this year following a contract-signing ceremony and site handover by the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) Committee, is expected to transform service delivery in the constituency once completed.

Fully funded through the NG-CDF under Githunguri Member of Parliament, Gathoni Wamuchomba, the facility is intended to decentralize government services and spare residents the inconvenience of traveling to Nairobi, Kiambu, or Thika to access essential government services.

The Huduma Centre will offer a wide range of services under one roof, including applications for national identity cards, birth certificates, business registrations, tax services, NHIF and NSSF services, among others.

Speaking during a recent inspection of the project, Wamuchomba said the facility would enhance efficiency in service delivery while reducing the cost and time residents spend seeking government services outside the constituency.

“For many years, the people of Githunguri have had to travel to Nairobi, Kiambu, or Thika to access essential government services. This Huduma Centre will change that reality by bringing services closer to our people, reducing costs, and saving valuable time. We are committed to ensuring the project is completed and operational as soon as possible,” said the MP.

She noted that the project forms part of broader efforts to improve access to public services and support socio-economic development within the constituency.

Residents have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that it will address longstanding challenges associated with accessing government services.

Maggie Komothai, a resident of Githunguri, said the facility would greatly benefit wananchi by eliminating the need for frequent travel to neighboring towns.

“This Huduma Centre will be a huge relief for many of us. We have spent a lot of money and time traveling to other towns just to get services like ID applications and government documents. Having these services here in Githunguri will make life much easier for residents,” she said.

The project is also expected to stimulate economic activity within Githunguri town by attracting more people to the area and creating employment opportunities during and after construction.

Once completed and operational, the Huduma Centre is expected to serve thousands of residents from Githunguri and neighboring areas, marking a significant milestone in efforts to bring government services closer to the people.

The Githunguri facility forms part of the government’s ongoing program to decentralize public services. Kenya currently has 59 operational Huduma Centers offering over 200 government services, while the State Department for Public Service has outlined plans to establish centers in all 290 constituencies to ensure citizens access services closer to their homes
