Makueni County Government has launched a Sh4.5 million solar-powered high-mast floodlight system to illuminate Masumba Market in Kasikeu Division, Mukaa Sub- County.
Speaking during the launch on Thursday, the County Chief Officer for Energy, Engineer Naomi Nthambi, said the initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC).
“The Government of Makueni County has intensified its rural electrification efforts, reaffirming its commitment to improving livelihoods and spurring economic growth through access to reliable power,” said Nthambi.
She noted that the county’s innovative fund-matching model with REREC demonstrates how strategic partnerships can accelerate access to clean and dependable energy. “The renewable energy installation at Masumba stands as a testament to what is possible when communities, local governments, and energy stakeholders unite to power sustainable development,” she added.
Nthambi explained that the project aims to transform the community by extending business hours for traders, enhancing public safety, and improving residents’ quality of life. She emphasized that Makueni is showcasing how collaborative investment in clean energy can fast-track development and bridge infrastructure gaps, ensuring electrification reaches even the most remote corners of the county.
REREC Engineer Geoffrey Kirui said the initiative will help the county reduce electricity costs while promoting the adoption of renewable energy. “This project reflects a strong step towards sustainable power solutions that will serve both economic and environmental goals,” he said.
The installation of the solar floodlights is expected to be completed by mid-December, after which the project will be officially commissioned.
