Vihiga County civil registration office has received over 1,100 birth certificate application forms since Saturday September 6, 2025 to September 9, 2025.
Residents crowded the county commissioner’s compound with their birth certificate application forms saying the birth certificates are required urgently in school to enable learners register for national examination.
In an interview with KNA on Wednesday in her office, Vihiga County civil registration officer, Beatrice Adumbi confirmed that they have received over 1,100 birth certificate application forms since Saturday.
She said that the large number of applicants was caused by misinformation where some residents thought that since identity cards were being issued for free, birth certificates would also be issued without payment.
She said they have already processed and issued out over 300 birth certificates despite facing network challenges and they are working on the remaining application forms as they continue to receive others daily.
“Some residents have come to apply for birth certificates without bringing along money to pay for them saying they claimed they had been informed that the birth certificates and identity cards will be issued out for free, making our work difficult,” said Adumbi.
She advised residents to always ensure they apply for birth certificates at least three months after a baby has been born to avoid last minute rush and crowding at the office wasting time they would have used to look for manual jobs to get money.
One of the residents, Nyaboke thanked the government for coming up with this programme of ensuring that residents get birth certificates saying she has three children who did not have birth certificates but her uncle has paid for two of them and she now has their birth certificates.
