Tana River Governor Maj. (Rtd), Dhadho Godhana, has disbursed bursaries worth Sh274 million to support bright but vulnerable learners in public schools.
Governor Godhana said the intervention aims to support vulnerable learners in secondary schools, colleges, universities and Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) while also announcing full fee sponsorship for all students in the county’s 10 VTCs.
Godhana has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to education as a vital tool for development, progress and the future of Tana River.
During the event, the Governor further handed over cheques worth Sh9.69 million to VTC managers from all four sub-counties, with each institution receiving between Sh645,000 and Sh2 million.
During the ceremony to issue the bursaries, the Governor was accompanied by County Assembly Speaker Osman Galole and County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) Abbas Kunyo (Education) and Abdullahi Hante (Public Service Management and Administration).
He said many students face financial challenges while pursuing their education dreams and that is why the county has a bursary scheme to alleviate financial burdens on parents amid the current economic hardships.
The county boss said the programme is founded on fairness and inclusivity to ensure every deserving student gets equal access to education opportunities across the marginalized county.
Godhana said by disbursing the funds, his administration has demonstrated its prioritisation of education as a tool for achieving sustainable socio-development.
“My administration considers education as a key pillar of development,” he said, adding that the county will continue to sustain investment in education.
Godhana said the bursary scheme will help reduce the financial burden on vulnerable households and improve access to education for learners across the vast county.
Speaker Osman Galole described children as the greatest assets of Tana River and stressed the need to support and encourage them to attain their full education potential.
He said education remains the greatest equaliser and the ‘strongest investment we can make for the future of Tana River County’.
“We will keep supporting the county in its commitments to sustained investment in education and healthcare,” said Galole.
